PRIMED 2nd Open Call

The PRIMED project is inviting potential end-users to obtain funding for testing and validating bio-based ingredients and products within real production environments.

The PRIMED project is launching an Open Call for end-users to validate high-value bio-based products developed in five living labs. Each living lab will allocate €100k to selected end-users to test and validate bio-based materials, chemicals, fuels, and end products.

Type of projects to be funded: Small-scale projects aimed at the development, testing, demonstration, and verification of new bio-based materials, technologies, ingredients, or products. These should address specific industry challenges and be relevant for market adoption. Preference is given to projects at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 6-7 (prototype demonstration in a relevant environment). The entity will select one Living Labs they wish to collaborate with.

Sectors / domain: Circular bioeconomy, bio-based materials, bioproducts, and biorefineries.

Individual or consortium: The call is open to for-profit legal entities, which can apply individually or as part of a joint application.

Specific eligibility requirements:
✔ Must be a for-profit legal entity.
✔ Must be established in an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe associated country.
✔ Must integrate a novel bio-based ingredient or product into its production process.
✔ Funding request must not exceed €50,000.
✔ Must commit additional human and financial resources beyond the grant.
✔ Must comply with Horizon Europe conflict of interest, security, and ethics rules.

Specific topics or challenges: Projects should focus on validating and integrating bio-based ingredients and materials into existing or new production processes. They should align with PRIMED’s circular bioeconomy and value chain sustainability goals, and collaborate with one of the LLabs:
1) ALC Bio-Lab (Spain) – Focuses on valorising livestock biomass and agricultural waste to produce biofertilizers, bio-CNG, and nitrogenous water for reuse in agriculture.
2) Bio-Silica Lab (Portugal) – Extracts silica from agro-industrial residues to develop functional silica nanoparticles with applications in automotive, construction, and textiles.
3) Liguria Bio-Lab (Italy) – Converts fishery and agro-food waste into bioplastics, bio-actives, fertilisers, and cosmetics, supporting regional circular economy initiatives.
4) BioEire Lab (Ireland) – Uses fermentation and pyrolysis to transform dairy by-products and forestry biomass into biochemicals, biochar, and bio-based fertilisers.
5) CellFactory Lab (Finland) – Utilises plant cell culture technology to create novel food and cosmetic ingredients from agri-food side-streams like vegetable processing waste.

Projects duration: 12 months (September 2025 – September 2026), with possible extension upon approval.

Budget, funding rates and payment conditions:
✔ Funding rate: Up to 100% of eligible costs, capped at €50,000 per project.
✔ Budget conditions: Funding covers laboratory analysis, prototype experimentation, engineering support, legal and financial assessments, market analysis, logistics, and other eligible activities.
✔ Payments: Based on the grant agreement and project milestones.
