EIT Raw Materials - Call for KAVA 14 (RIS Innovation)

EIT RawMaterials funds RIS-focused consortia to validate and upscale TRL 5+ raw-materials innovations towards industrial deployment and market entry.

Type of projects to be funded: The RIS Innovation KAVA 14 Call supports innovation projects based on validated technologies, products or services that require additional testing, demonstration, proof of concept and upscaling before commercialisation. During Phase 1, the technology, product or service owner has up to one year to test and validate the solution together with an industrial partner in the consortium. Progress is then subject to an EIT RawMaterials go/no-go assessment. Successful projects may continue into Phase 2, where the solution is scaled and tested at industrial scale.

Sectors / domain: Raw materials and the raw-materials value chain. Projects must align with the EIT RawMaterials Strategic Agenda 2021–2027 and strengthen innovation capacity, competitiveness and commercialisation in RIS countries.

Individual or consortium: A consortium of 2 to 5 legal entities is mandatory, with participants from at least 2 different countries eligible for Horizon Europe funding. The consortium must represent at least two sides of the Knowledge Triangle – education, research and industry/business<. At least 50% of consortium partners must come from RIS-eligible countries, more than 60% of the requested EIT funding must be allocated to RIS partners, and the project must be coordinated by a partner from a RIS-eligible country. The majority of project activities must also be carried out in RIS countries and provide tangible benefits there. No single partner may receive more than 80% of the total grant.

Specific eligibility requirements: Funded entities must normally be established in an EU Member State, including its outermost regions; an eligible Overseas Country or Territory; a Horizon Europe Associated Country; or an eligible low- or middle-income country. Other entities may receive funding only where their participation is considered essential by the EIT. A valid PIC is required. Applicable EU sanctions and Horizon Europe restrictions also apply. Public bodies, research organisations and higher education institutions in EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries must have a Gender Equality Plan where required.

The proposed technology must be at least TRL 5 at project start, corresponding to technology validated in a relevant environment, and applicants must provide documented evidence of this. The technology is expected to reach at least TRL 8 by project end.

Specific topics or challenges: Projects must address raw-materials challenges with strong commercial and regional relevance and are invited to focus on one of four thematic areas defined by EIT RawMaterials’ Strategic Impact Group Networks (SIGN). Projects must include a credible market opportunity, customer value proposition, competitive positioning, IP approach and route to market.

Projects must target at least one innovation launched onto the market with documented sales revenue of at least €10,000 in a RIS-eligible country during the funding period.

Projects duration: Phase 1 lasts up to 12 months, while Phase 2 may last up to a further 12 months. All projects must be completed by 31 December 2028.

Budget, funding rates and payment conditions:
Funding rate: The consortium must provide at least 30% co-funding of the total project funding, meaning EIT RawMaterials can cover up to approximately 70%.

Budget conditions / limitations: In Phase 1, projects may receive up to €500,000 in EIT funding. During Phase 2 they may receive an additional €300,000–€500,000. Total EIT funding for both phases may not exceed €1,000,000 per project.

Payments: 60% of the EIT grant allocated for year N is provided as pre-financing during that year. The remaining balance is paid in the following year on an actual-cost basis.

Financial sustainability: A mandatory Financial Sustainability Mechanism (FSM) must be included in the proposal. Applicants must propose either a royalty model or an equity model.
