The Guests
Jyri Kähönen: Transforming Film Production with Generative AI
As we dive into the future of filmmaking, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have Jyri Kähönen, CEO of Mindbend, on the podcast. Jyri is a seasoned filmmaker, with a career that includes directing Netflix’s first Finnish acquisition, Bordertown, and HBO’s Tracker. Now, as the founder of Mindbend, he is leading a revolution in film production by integrating generative AI tools to enhance the storytelling process.
At SLUSH Helsinki 2024, where we had the pleasure of interviewing him, Jyri shared his vision of how AI is set to be the next major shift in cinema. Reflecting on the historical relationship between technology and film, Jyri explained, “Film has always been a technological art form. The greatest creative breakthroughs, sound, color, digitalization, have stemmed from technological advancements. We are now at the cusp of what might be the biggest transformation yet: generative AI.”
The Art-Tech Balance: Jyri’s Philosophy on Filmmaking
One of the key themes of our conversation was the balance between artistic expression and technological innovation. Jyri firmly believes that art should lead, but technology can amplify its impact. “Art should always lead, but technology can amplify the impact. Our goal at Mindbend is to create tools that empower filmmakers to tell their stories without being overshadowed by the tech behind them,” he shared.
Jyri envisions a future where AI is fully integrated into the filmmaking process, enabling creators to make films faster, smarter, and with greater creative control. The tools Mindbend is developing will allow filmmakers to experiment in ways that were once constrained by traditional methods, all while preserving the essence of cinematic art.
Empowering Filmmakers: Oliver Simon’s Vision at K5 Factory
Switching gears, we also had the opportunity to interview Oliver Simon, a pioneer in the world of transmedia storytelling and co-founder of K5 Factory. Oliver’s work is redefining the intersection of film, gaming, and immersive experiences, bringing these worlds together in innovative ways. K5 Factory is behind numerous exciting projects, such as the international TV drama Anon and the immersive gaming experience Labyrinth DeLux.
Oliver’s vision is to empower both established filmmakers and up-and-coming creators by providing them with the best tools to push the boundaries of traditional storytelling. “Our goal is not just to profit from this technology, but to empower creators by giving them the best tools available. That’s what excites me most” Oliver shared during our conversation.
Blending Film, Gaming, and Immersive Experiences
K5 Factory is also pushing the envelope with its work in virtual production, including their pioneering virtual recreation of Oktoberfest, the world’s largest funfair. This immersive virtual experience allows users to explore the festival from anywhere, with physics-based games and virtual roller coasters. For Oliver, this is just the beginning of a larger vision to merge gaming and filmmaking into a seamless experience.
“We’re creating games that look like films and films that are interactive like games” Oliver explained. “The goal is to merge these worlds completely, and we want to be at the forefront of that transformation.”
AI in Cinema: The Human Element Remains Key
Looking to the Future: A New Era in Filmmaking
As we wrap up this fascinating episode of Efecto Cascada, it’s clear that both Jyri Kähönen and Oliver Simon are helping shape a new era in filmmaking. Their work at Mindbend and K5 Factory is revolutionizing how stories are told, blending art, technology, and interactivity in groundbreaking ways.
For filmmakers, the future is bright. As Jyri envisions, “In five to ten years, AI will be an integral part of filmmaking, just like cameras and editing software today.” Meanwhile, Oliver is leading the charge to merge the worlds of film and gaming, creating immersive experiences that defy traditional storytelling boundaries.
Both of them remind us that while technology will continue to push the limits of what’s possible, it’s the creative vision that remains at the heart of great cinema.
