EIT Raw Materials - Call for KAVA 14 (Upscaling)
EIT RawMaterials funds consortia to validate and upscale mature raw-materials technologies from TRL 5 towards market entry and industrial-scale deployment.
Type of projects to be funded: The KAVA 14 Upscaling Call supports innovation projects based on validated technologies, products or services that require further testing, demonstration, proof of concept and industrial upscaling before commercialisation. During Phase 1, the technology or solution owner must test and validate the solution with an industrial partner in the consortium. Following an interim go/no-go evaluation by EIT RawMaterials, successful projects may progress to Phase 2, where the solution is scaled and tested at industrial scale and may already begin generating revenues.
Sectors / domain: Raw materials and the raw-materials value chain. Projects must align with the EIT RawMaterials Strategic Agenda 2021–2027 and contribute to innovation, commercialisation and European impact in the raw-materials sector.
Individual or consortium: A consortium of 2 to 5 legal entities is mandatory. Participants must be from at least 2 different countries eligible for Horizon Europe funding. The consortium must represent at least two sides of the Knowledge Triangle – education, research and industry/business. An industrial partner must play a key role in validating the technology during Phase 1, and the commercialising partner(s) must be clearly identified. The commercialising partner(s) must account for at least 50% of the project funding. All project participants must become EIT RawMaterials KIC Partners by the time the project starts.
Specific eligibility requirements: Funded participants must normally be established in an EU Member State, including outermost regions; an eligible Overseas Country or Territory; a Horizon Europe Associated Country; or an eligible low- or middle-income country. Entities from other countries may receive funding only where their participation is considered essential by the EIT. The proposed technology must be at least TRL 5 at the beginning of the project and is expected to reach at least TRL 8 by the end.
Specific topics or challenges: Proposals are invited to focus on one of four thematic areas defined by EIT RawMaterials’ Strategic Impact Group Networks (SIGN). In all cases, projects must align with the EIT RawMaterials Strategic Agenda 2021–2027, demonstrate a strong commercial opportunity and European impact, and provide a credible route to market.
It is expected that each project launches at least one innovation onto the market during the funding period and document at least €10,000 in sales revenue.
Projects duration: Phase 1 lasts up to 1 year, Phase 2 may receive further funding for up to 1 additional year. All projects must be completed by 31 December 2028.
Budget, funding rates and payment conditions:
Funding rate: The consortium must provide at least 50% co-funding of the total project funding. Higher co-funding is positively evaluated and can generate additional evaluation points.
Budget conditions / limitations: The total funding for each project is expected to be at least €500,000 per year and no more than €2,500,000 for the total project duration. Commercialising partners must consume at least 50% of the funding.
Payments: Funding is disbursed annually. 60% of the EIT grant allocated for year N is paid as pre-financing, while the remaining balance is paid during the following year on an actual-cost basis.
Financial sustainability: A mandatory Financial Sustainability Mechanism (FSM) must be proposed. Applicants must choose either royalties or equity.
