EP 11 – ReSilence & Mindspaces: Nefeli Georgakopoulou on Where Sound Meets Space

Resilence & Mindspaces

Dear SPLORERS, welcome to the eleventh episode of Efecto Cascada! This week, we’re diving into the creative nexus of architecture, art, and technology to explore how European projects are reshaping urban spaces and public design. Our guest, Nefeli Georgakopoulou, an architect and associate researcher at the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), brings a wealth of experience to our discussion.

We’ll uncover the transformative potential of two fascinating initiatives: ReSilence, which pioneers urban soundscapes for the future, and MindSpaces, a project integrating neuroscience, art, and advanced technologies to redesign public and private spaces. Join us as we explore how interdisciplinary approaches can foster more inclusive, empathetic, and innovative environments.

Sound and Space: ReSilence & MindSpaces

Nefeli introduces us to the groundbreaking work behind ReSilence and MindSpaces.

  • ReSilence envisions a future where the soundscapes of cities are designed with the same intentionality as physical spaces. It blends urban design with artistic and technological practices to create sonic environments that enhance social interaction and empathy, while addressing ecological sound challenges.
  • MindSpaces redefines how we experience spaces by combining art, neuroscience, and technology. Using VR, physiological sensing, and emotional data, this project aims to better understand and improve how people interact with their environments, making design processes more inclusive and participatory.

Both projects emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, supported by frameworks like the S+T+ARTS initiative, and cascade funding, which enables innovative experimentation by smaller organizations and creatives.

If you’re curious about how technology and art can transform the way we design urban spaces, this episode is for you! From soundscapes that foster human connection to spaces that respond to emotional and sensory data, Nefeli walks us through how these projects are paving the way for future cities that prioritize inclusivity, innovation, and sustainability.
